ISLAMABAD: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has reduced gas supply to six hours a day as the ongoing shortage continues to affect consumers, according to an official statement.
The company said gas would now be supplied in two daily intervals, mainly during breakfast and dinner hours. Supply would remain suspended in the afternoon because of low pressure in the system.
According to the statement, the revised arrangement has been introduced to ensure limited gas availability during peak consumption periods only. Authorities said the shortage in the system had become so severe that supplying gas three times a day was no longer possible.
They further stated that even continuing supply during the current two time slots was proving difficult under existing conditions.
Shortage linked to LNG import disruptions
The crisis has been attributed primarily to disruptions in liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, which have created difficulties in maintaining stable gas pressure, the statement said.
With pressure levels under strain, the utility has moved to restrict supply hours in an effort to manage demand during the times when household use is typically highest.
The reduction is expected to have a noticeable effect on routine domestic life, as consumers will now have access to gas only during limited periods of the day.
Citizens have been urged to use gas carefully in view of the reduced availability. The official statement said the system was under severe pressure and that the curtailed schedule had been introduced in response to the continuing crisis.
The latest decision comes as the gas shortage continues to disrupt daily life for consumers relying on regular household supply. Under the new arrangement, afternoon supply will remain unavailable, while the available gas will be concentrated around the morning and evening meal preparation hours.
Authorities said the revised schedule was aimed at managing the shortfall within the limits of the existing system. They maintained that the present situation had left little room for broader distribution and that maintaining even the reduced schedule remained a challenge.
The statement also appealed to the public to conserve gas, as the reduced supply pattern is likely to continue affecting normal routines amid the broader energy shortfall.
