Karachi: Sindh Police has decided to create a dedicated Aerial Surveillance Wing aimed at improving round-the-clock monitoring of urban areas, highways, traffic, railway lines and riverine, or kutcha, regions.
Inspector General of Sindh Police Javed Alam Odho sought detailed and practical proposals from senior officers on how the new unit should be established. The matter was taken up at a high-level meeting chaired by the provincial police chief.
According to the details shared in the meeting, participants included the DIGs of Headquarters, Establishment, IT and Telecommunications, along with the director general of the Safe City Authority and assistant inspectors general. DIGs from Sukkur and Larkana, as well as the relevant SSPs, joined the session through video link.
During the meeting, the DIG IT presented a detailed briefing on the aerial surveillance resources currently available to the police, as well as modern technologies, drones and other equipment that could be used for the proposed wing. The presentation also covered the features of the equipment, operational goals, training needs, procurement procedures and the expected advantages of introducing such a system.
Senior officers attending the meeting shared their experiences and recommendations, and also pointed out possible difficulties linked to aerial surveillance operations.
Modern policing focus
Odho said aerial and digital monitoring had become an essential part of modern policing and described it as the future direction of law enforcement. He said the use of advanced technology and aerial surveillance systems would make policing and monitoring easier, while also improving effectiveness and reliability.
The IG said uninterrupted aerial observation could play an important role in reducing crime, detecting suspicious movement and helping police respond quickly. The initiative is also expected to support traffic regulation, crowd management, oversight of public gatherings and broader efforts to protect life and property.
Committee to finalise framework
To move the plan forward, Sindh Police will form a committee made up of senior officers. The committee will work on finalising the structure of the proposed wing, its standard operating procedures, operational model and organisational framework.
The proposed unit is intended to provide sustained surveillance support across a range of policing areas, with the police leadership examining both the technical and administrative requirements before the wing is formally set up.
