Rural fairs in South Punjab continue to reflect local culture and community life

MULTAN: Traditional fairs being held across South Punjab during the current season are continuing to present a lively mix of culture, recreation and community participation, attracting people from different age groups through their festive atmosphere.

These countryside gatherings, which are closely linked with local customs, are featuring a range of entertainment and cultural activities. Among the main attractions are kabaddi contests and other traditional sports, which are drawing sizeable crowds. Stalls offering sweets and customary foods are also adding to the celebratory environment, while children and families are taking part in activities such as swings and toy shopping.

Major fairs are taking place in Jalalpur Pirwala, Shujaabad, Suraj Miani, Uch Sharif, Dunyapur, Sher Shah and Chowk Qureshi. Similar events are also being organised at Manglot Sharif in Lodhran, Pir Mubarak Shah in Band-Bosan, and the Sarwar Shaheed area of Multan district, where local traditions and strong public participation remain visible.

Larger festivals linked to shrines are marked by spiritual gatherings, a calm atmosphere and traditional competitions. Alongside these, hundreds of smaller fairs are also being held in villages across the region. These smaller events are generally more modest in scale and centre largely on social interaction and spiritual connection, with limited recreational arrangements.

Residents said the fairs carry significance beyond leisure and festivity. Dilawar Hussain, a resident of Nawabpur, said such events help create a sense of calm, reinforce ties within communities and contribute to preserving South Punjab’s cultural heritage.

With such fairs being held in nearly every union council during the season, these events continue to serve as an expression of the region’s identity, traditions and shared social life.

Seasonal gatherings across the region

The ongoing fair season in South Punjab is highlighting both the recreational and cultural dimensions of rural life. From sports and food stalls to shrine-centred gatherings and village-level events, the fairs are bringing together residents in settings that combine celebration with longstanding tradition.

The events also underline the role of local fairs in maintaining customs that remain deeply rooted in the social fabric of the area. Through broad participation in both large and small gatherings, communities across South Punjab are continuing to keep these traditions alive.
