HAMILTON: Devon Conway smashed a commanding half-century as New Zealand bowled out South Africa cheaply to clinch the second Twenty20 International by 68 runs in Hamilton on Tuesday, levelling the five-match series at 1-1.
Conway's impressive knock of 60 off 49 balls anchored the home side's innings, guiding them to a competitive total of 175-6 after being asked to bat first at Seddon Park.
South Africa collapse with the bat
In reply, the Proteas suffered a dramatic batting collapse, losing wickets at regular intervals before being bowled out for just 107 in 15.3 overs. New Zealand's pace duo of Ben Sears and Lockie Ferguson proved too hot to handle, claiming three wickets apiece to dismantle the South African batting order.
The result ensured the series was squared after South Africa had taken a 1-0 lead by winning the opening encounter in Mount Maunganui on Sunday by seven wickets.
Conway anchors New Zealand innings
Conway produced easily the most significant innings of the match, with the 34-year-old left-hander striking five fours and two sixes during his stay at the crease. The South African-born batter played with controlled aggression to set the platform for New Zealand's total.
Second-string squads in action
Both nations have opted to field largely second-tier line-ups for the bilateral series, choosing to rest their first-choice players in the aftermath of the T20 World Cup. New Zealand reached the final of the global tournament earlier this month, where they were beaten by hosts India. The Black Caps had defeated South Africa in the semi-finals en route to the summit clash.
With three matches still remaining in the series, both teams will be looking to gain the upper hand as the contest moves forward. The series provides an opportunity for fringe players on both sides to stake their claims for regular spots in their respective national squads.
