WASHINGTON: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday unanimously approved a resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for an additional three months. All 15 members of the council, including Pakistan, voted in favour of the extension, which will now run from March 16 to June 17.
This decision marks a shift from the usual practice of renewing UNAMA’s mandate for a full year. The shorter extension comes amid ongoing differences among council members regarding the duration of the mission’s renewal.
Explaining its position, Pakistan emphasized the importance of UNAMA’s role in Afghanistan. Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, stated: “Pakistan supports UNAMA in promoting peace, security and stability in Afghanistan which confronts multiple challenges, particularly the increasing threat of terrorism, human rights, narcotics and d.”
Ambassador Jadoon further warned of an “exponential rise in the threat of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan,” highlighting the significance of the mission’s continued presence in the country.
The UNAMA mission has been central to the international community’s engagement in Afghanistan, focusing on supporting peace and stability, monitoring human rights, and coordinating humanitarian assistance. The latest extension ensures that the mission will continue its work at least until mid-June, while discussions among Security Council members continue regarding its long-term future.
The resolution’s unanimous adoption reflects a shared recognition among council members of the ongoing challenges facing Afghanistan and the need for continued international engagement through the UN.
