Gilani directs austerity measures for Senate aimed at saving Rs700 million

ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday directed the implementation of wide-ranging austerity measures for the Senate Secretariat, projecting a reduction of more than 50 per cent in the secretariat's remaining budgetary utilisation for the current fiscal year — a move expected to translate into savings of approximately Rs700-750 million.

High-level meeting reviews austerity plan

According to a statement issued by the Senate Secretariat, Gilani presided over a high-level meeting at the secretariat to review the austerity measures and discuss their implementation in light of the country's prevailing economic situation.

The statement said the austerity measures for the secretariat are aligned with a broader government initiative aimed at addressing a global fuel crunch stemming from the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Cuts to begin from chairman's office

The discussion during the meeting centred on significant cuts in Senate expenditures, beginning with substantial reductions in the budget of the chairman's office, the statement noted.

Adopting a top-down approach to fiscal discipline, Gilani directed that cuts would start from his own office before being extended to other areas of the secretariat's spending.

The projected savings of Rs700-750 million represent a considerable portion of the Senate Secretariat's budgetary allocation for the ongoing fiscal year. The measures are aimed at demonstrating fiscal responsibility at the institutional level, with the chairman leading by example by targeting his own office's budget first.

The move comes as Pakistan continues to navigate a challenging economic environment, with the government pursuing cost-cutting initiatives across various state institutions.
