SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A member of a local peace committee, Mir Kalam Wazir, was killed by unidentified gunmen during Iftar in the Azam Warsak area on Saturday, according to District Police Officer Mohammad Tahir Shah Wazir.
DPO Shah reported that the attack took place near a private educational institution, where unknown assailants opened fire on Mir Kalam Wazir before fleeing the scene. He added that police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Police officials described the deceased as a prominent figure in the area and an active participant in the local peace committee. His death has led to widespread grief and concern among residents of the region.
Authorities noted that the security situation in South Waziristan has deteriorated over the past year, with a marked rise in incidents of terrorism. These include bomb blasts, targeted killings, suicide attacks, civilian deaths, kidnappings for ransom, and assaults on police and security forces. Such incidents have been reported in Lower South Waziristan, Upper South Waziristan, and North Waziristan.
The killing of Mir Kalam Wazir underscores the ongoing challenges faced by peace committees and local communities amid increasing violence in the region.
