GENEVA: The United Nations Special Rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights, Ben Saul, has stated that the world is entering a "new dark age" of human rights abuses, citing the failure of the UN Security Council to address certain conflicts and acts of aggression.
Speaking at the United Nations Human Rights Council, Saul sharply criticized the Security Council for what he described as selective condemnation of international aggression. He noted that while the Council has condemned Iran, it has not taken similar action against Israel or the United States. According to Saul, this selective approach undermines the credibility and effectiveness of the international system for protecting human rights.
Saul said, "We are living through a new dark age of abuse, where the international system is failing to protect the most vulnerable." He added that the Security Council's inaction in the face of aggression by some states, while condemning others, has contributed to a deterioration of global human rights standards.
The UN expert's remarks come amid ongoing conflicts and reports of human rights violations in various parts of the world. Saul emphasized the importance of impartiality and consistency in the application of international law, warning that double standards could erode trust in global institutions.
He also called on the international community to uphold its obligations to protect human rights and to ensure that all states are held accountable for violations, regardless of their political alliances or power.
Saul's comments reflect growing concerns among human rights advocates about the effectiveness of the United Nations in addressing major crises and ensuring justice for victims of abuses.
