ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, has announced that 74% of Pakistan’s electricity is currently being produced from domestic sources, significantly reducing the country’s reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Speaking on the current state of the energy sector, Minister Leghari stated that the government has set an ambitious target to increase the share of local power generation to over 96% by the year 2034. He emphasized that the increased use of indigenous resources is helping to mitigate risks associated with fluctuations in global LNG supply and prices.
Leghari explained that the shift towards domestic energy sources is a strategic move to ensure energy security and stability for Pakistan. He noted that the country’s power generation mix has seen a substantial transformation in recent years, with a growing emphasis on utilizing local resources such as hydropower, coal, nuclear, and renewable energy.
“Currently, 74% of our electricity is being generated from domestic sources. Our goal is to exceed 96% by 2034,” the minister said. He added that this transition is expected to not only reduce dependency on imported fuels but also support the national economy by conserving foreign exchange reserves.
Leghari highlighted that the government’s energy policies are focused on expanding the use of indigenous resources and diversifying the energy mix. He pointed out that this approach will help shield the country from external shocks in the global energy market, particularly in the context of LNG supply disruptions.
The minister also mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency of the power sector and ensure reliable electricity supply to consumers. He reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving its energy targets and supporting sustainable economic growth through the development of local power sources.
