Man detained after attempted attack on former occupied Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah

New Delhi — A man was arrested on Thursday following an attempt on the life of senior Kashmiri politician Farooq Abdullah during a wedding ceremony in the Greater Kailash area of occupied Jammu, according to Indian media reports.

Abdullah, who is a former chief minister of India-occupied Kashmir and the president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), was attending a wedding event when the incident occurred. The Hindu, citing initial reports, stated that the attacker brandished a pistol and tried to approach Abdullah. Security personnel assigned to protect Abdullah intervened and overpowered the suspect before he could reach the politician.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reportedly said that the assailant opened fire. However, The Hindu noted that police have not confirmed whether any shots were actually fired during the incident.

Other prominent figures, including occupied Kashmir’s Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and adviser to the chief minister Nasir Aslam Wani, were also present at the event when the attempt took place.

In an official statement carried by The Hindu, police said, “There was an attempt made on the life of Dr Farooq Abdullah when he was attending a marriage ceremony at Royal Park, Greater Kailash.” The statement further added, “The security personnel of J&K Police managed to overpower the suspect.”

Farooq Abdullah is also the father of Omar Abdullah, the current chief minister of India-occupied Kashmir. The incident has raised concerns about the security of high-profile political figures in the region, especially during public events.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the identity of the suspect or the motive behind the attack. Investigations are ongoing, and police have yet to confirm additional information about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
