Tanker drivers report extended waits at depots amid fuel shortage concerns

ISLAMABAD: Tanker drivers across Pakistan have reported experiencing prolonged delays at fuel depots, attributing the situation to a shortage of petrol. This development comes as the government seeks to allay public fears regarding the possibility of another increase in fuel prices.

The disruptions in the global oil supply chain have been linked to the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has affected shipping routes and damaged oil and gas infrastructure in the Middle East. These events have contributed to a rise in international oil prices, prompting countries to reassess their fuel supply strategies.

On Tuesday, dozens of fuel tankers were observed parked along roads near depots in Lahore, unable to collect petrol. Abdul Shakoor, a tanker driver, told AFP, “There is no petrol at the depot for the past four days. Iran has closed the border from their side. The depot is lying empty.”

Pakistan relies heavily on oil and gas imports from Gulf countries. In response to the regional crisis, naval escorts were provided to fuel vessels this week to help maintain the continuity of supplies.

Last week, the government raised fuel prices by approximately 20 percent. This price hike led to long queues and panic buying at filling stations nationwide.

The Petroleum Minister has sought to downplay concerns about further price increases, emphasizing efforts to ensure stable fuel supplies despite the ongoing challenges in the region.
