South Korea says it cannot prevent US from moving military assets to Middle East

SEOUL – South Korea has stated that it is unable to stop the United States from redeploying its military assets from the Korean Peninsula to the Middle East, following reports that Washington may shift key military resources to address rising tensions in the region.

Concerns have emerged in Asia regarding potential vulnerabilities in regional defense capabilities due to the possible transfer of US military equipment. The issue has gained attention after the United States is considering moving some of its strategic assets, which are currently stationed in South Korea, to the Middle East.

South Korea’s Defence Ministry acknowledged these concerns, noting that the deployment and movement of US military assets are decisions made by the United States. The ministry emphasized that it does not have the authority to prevent the US from relocating its forces or equipment, as these decisions fall under Washington’s jurisdiction.

“We cannot intervene in the operational decisions of the United States regarding the deployment of its military assets,” a South Korean Defence Ministry official said. The official added that South Korea is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with the US to ensure that the security of the Korean Peninsula is not compromised.

Reports of a potential redeployment have sparked debate in South Korea and other Asian countries, with some experts expressing concern that the move could create gaps in the region’s defense posture. However, South Korean officials have indicated that the US remains committed to the defense of South Korea and the broader region.

The United States maintains a significant military presence in South Korea as part of a longstanding security alliance. The possibility of shifting assets to the Middle East comes amid heightened tensions in that region, prompting Washington to reassess its global military deployments.

South Korea has reiterated its intention to work closely with the United States to address any security challenges that may arise from changes in the deployment of US forces.
