New York — Two American men have been charged with terrorism-related offenses after allegedly throwing a nail bomb near a protest outside the residence of New York Mayor Mamdani over the weekend, according to charging documents released on Monday.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) stated that the suspects, both US citizens, are currently in custody following the incident. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, “This is being investigated as an act of ISIS-inspired terrorism,” referring to the Islamic State group. She also clarified that authorities do not believe the attack is connected to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
The incident occurred on Saturday during a demonstration led by a far-right influencer, which was organized to oppose public Muslim prayer. Police identified one of the suspects as Emir Balat. According to the charging documents, two suspicious devices were thrown by Balat near the protest site. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the attack.
Following their arrest, the two men reportedly told police that they were aligned with the militant Islamic State group. The charging documents further reveal that the suspects “referred to ISIS in recorded post-arrest statements.” Additionally, Balat is said to have written on a piece of paper pledging allegiance to the Islamic State.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident as a potential act of terrorism inspired by ISIS. Further details regarding the suspects’ backgrounds and motives have not been disclosed at this time.
