Stranded Iranian sailors create diplomatic challenge for Sri Lanka and India

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka and India are currently facing a complex diplomatic situation after providing refuge to 434 sailors from three Iranian naval vessels that were either targeted or threatened by the United States. This development comes amid escalating tensions following the US-Israel attack on Iran, which has extended the conflict into the Indian Ocean region.

According to details, the Iranian ships had participated in a naval exercise organized by India off the coast of Visakhapatnam. The situation escalated when the US and Israel began bombing Iran. The diplomatic dilemma for Sri Lanka and India revolves around concerns of a possible response from the United States, prompting legal authorities in both countries to review international conventions and maritime laws to determine appropriate actions regarding the ships and their crews.

The incident unfolded when the IRIS Dena, an Iranian frigate, was sunk by a torpedo fired from a US submarine on Wednesday, just outside Sri Lanka’s territorial waters. Reports indicate that between 130 and 180 sailors were aboard the vessel at the time, with at least 84 fatalities confirmed. Sri Lankan authorities rescued 32 survivors from the incident. Many of these survivors, after receiving medical treatment, have been discharged from hospital and are currently being accommodated at the Koggala air force base in southern Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the IRIS Lavan, an amphibious landing ship, docked at India’s southern port of Kochi on Wednesday. The fate of the crew and the vessel remains under consideration as both Sri Lanka and India weigh their options in light of potential diplomatic repercussions.

The presence of the Iranian sailors and naval vessels in their respective territories has placed both countries in a sensitive position as they navigate the legal and diplomatic implications of the ongoing conflict and their relationships with the United States.
