Chief Justice calls for gender-sensitive reforms in Pakistan’s justice system

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa has emphasized the need for a justice system in Pakistan that is responsive to gender-specific challenges, highlighting the importance of ensuring equal access to justice for all citizens, regardless of gender.

Speaking at an event, Chief Justice Isa stated, “The justice system must be gender-responsive and sensitive to the needs of all segments of society.” He underscored that women and marginalized groups often face unique barriers in accessing legal remedies and called for reforms to address these issues.

The Chief Justice pointed out that gender-based discrimination remains a significant concern in the country’s legal framework. He urged stakeholders, including lawmakers, legal professionals, and civil society, to work collaboratively towards creating an environment where justice is accessible and fair for everyone.

Justice Isa also highlighted the role of the judiciary in upholding the rights of women and vulnerable groups. He said, “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the justice system does not perpetuate discrimination but instead serves as a tool for empowerment and equality.”

He further noted that the judiciary has taken steps to promote gender sensitivity, including the establishment of dedicated desks and training programs for judicial officers. However, he stressed that more needs to be done to eliminate systemic barriers and ensure that legal processes are inclusive.

The Chief Justice’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about legal reforms and gender equality in Pakistan. His call for a gender-responsive justice system has been welcomed by various stakeholders advocating for women’s rights and social justice.

Justice Isa concluded by reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to upholding constitutional guarantees of equality and non-discrimination, stating, “Justice must be accessible to all, irrespective of gender, and the judiciary will continue to play its part in achieving this goal.”
