LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday approved the launch of the “Punjab Chief Minister Rehmat Card” programme aimed at providing financial assistance to widows and orphaned children deprived of parental care across the province, said a handout issued by the Punjab DGPR.

The decision was taken during a special meeting chaired by the chief minister to introduce the initiative for the welfare and financial support of widows and orphans in Punjab. Special Assistant to the CM on Ushr and Zakat, Rashid Nasrullah, briefed the participants in detail about the project and its implementation framework, said a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

The meeting was informed that financial assistance of up to Rs100,000 would be provided under the Rehmat Card programme. In its first phase, more than 40,000 deserving families are expected to benefit. The project will be launched immediately after Eid, according to the briefing.

Officials said widows and orphaned children would receive Rs25,000 each through the scheme. Applications for the Rehmat Card can be submitted through a mobile application, web portal, call centre or the Zakat office, ensuring easy access for eligible applicants.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Maryam Nawaz said that every citizen has a rightful share in Punjab’s resources, and the government would utilise all available means to ensure that assistance reaches those who truly deserve it.

She said the Rehmat Card programme is designed to help widowed women move towards self-employment and financial independence, adding that Punjab is a province where every citizen is cared for and that the initiative will enable widows and orphaned children to live dignified and financially stable lives.

CM grieved over loss of four lives in gas leakage incident

Separately, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed deep sorrow over the death of four people in a gas leakage incident in Pindi Gheb.

The chief minister extended her heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed that they are granted patience and strength in this difficult time.
