Peshawar safe city project inaugurated after 18 years at cost of Rs2.23 billion

The long-awaited Peshawar safe city project was officially inaugurated by Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi. Conceived in 2008, the project has faced significant delays, with its launch coming 18 years after its initial proposal.

Developed at a reported cost of Rs2.23 billion, the project introduces a modern and integrated urban security system for the provincial capital. The system is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence-powered cameras that feature facial recognition capabilities and provide continuous, round-the-clock surveillance.

According to reports, a total of 711 surveillance cameras have been installed at 133 key and sensitive locations throughout Peshawar. These state-of-the-art cameras are designed to ensure effective monitoring and improved situational awareness across the city.

The safe city project operates using artificial intelligence and advanced video analytics. The system is capable of automatically generating alerts for wanted individuals or suspicious vehicles, and it provides real-time location updates to the nearest police officers. This is expected to enhance law enforcement's ability to respond promptly to potential security threats.

In addition to its surveillance capabilities, the project features its own autonomous communication and wireless network, further strengthening the city's security infrastructure.

Officials have described the project as a comprehensive framework that will play a pivotal role in improving law and order in Peshawar. The implementation of these technologies is aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and supporting the efforts of local authorities in maintaining public security.
