MUSCAT: What was meant to be a showcase of natural camel beauty turned into a scandal worthy of the Gulf’s gossip columns after 20 camels were disqualified from a prestigious Omani beauty contest for getting a little too glamorous.
Veterinary inspectors discovered that the animals had undergone cosmetic procedures, including Botox injections, lip fillers, and other enhancements—transforming some camels into over-the-top desert divas.
Officials said the camels’ lips, humps, and facial structure were clearly tampered with to gain an unfair edge. Using advanced veterinary screening methods, inspectors caught the sneaky beautification attempts, emphasizing that artificial tweaks violate the rules and the spirit of fair competition.
The Omani contests are no small affair: high stakes, major prestige, and prize money that can make a camel owner’s desert dreams come true. Authorities reiterated that maintaining fairness and cultural authenticity is a top priority.
This isn’t the first time cosmetic camels have stirred controversy. In 2021, over 40 camels were barred from a Saudi Arabian beauty contest after traces of Botox and other interventions were detected. Saudi Arabia has even started issuing special passports for camels to better regulate the sector, reflecting how seriously the Gulf takes its camel pageants.
Organizers stressed that whether human or camel, artificial enhancements compromise the spirit of competition. The lesson for breeders? Leave the Botox and fillers off the camels—or risk being shown the desert door.
