England cricket captain Harry Brook has expressed disappointment over reports suggesting that Pakistani players may be excluded from the upcoming season of The Hundred, England’s domestic white-ball competition. Brook commented on the issue during a press interaction on Saturday, ahead of England’s Super Eights match against Sri Lanka in Kandy.
The controversy arose after former England captain Michael Vaughan urged the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to address concerns following BBC reports that Pakistani players could be "overlooked" in the player auction scheduled for next month. Vaughan called on the ECB to “act fast” in response to these reports.
Brook, who is set to play for Sunrisers Leeds—a franchise owned by Indian interests—in this year’s edition of The Hundred, was asked about the potential exclusion of Pakistani cricketers. He responded, “Our main focus now is what’s coming up in the T20 World Cup. It’s not really any of our business, to be honest.” However, he added, “But what I would say is Pakistan have been a great cricket nation for many years.” Brook further stated that it would be “ashame” if Pakistani players were shut out of the competition.
Longstanding political tensions between India and Pakistan have limited cricketing contests between the two nations to international events. The issue of Pakistani players’ participation in The Hundred has gained attention due to the ownership of some franchises by Indian entities, though no official statement has been made by the ECB regarding the matter.
The situation remains unresolved, with calls from former players and current cricketers highlighting the significance of Pakistani talent in international cricket leagues. As the player auction approaches, stakeholders await further clarification from the relevant authorities.
