Party’s CIS says Adiala Jail examination lacks credibility and transparency, denying govt claim of informing PTI leadership about medical check-up
Says Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, denied access while cousin doctor Dr. Nausherwan Burki also barred
Insists medical decisions are sole constitutional right of the family, refusing to recognise or accept any report issued without personal doctors
Warns eye condition too serious for prison-based examination, demanding immediate medical procedures for PTI Founder in presence of family, personal physicians
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday categorically rejected “what it described” as a stage-managed medical examination of its founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, reportedly conducted by the government and jail authorities at Adiala Jail, asserting that “any medical procedure carried out under such questionable circumstances” — and any report emanating from it — lacks credibility, transparency, and acceptability.
PTI Central Information Secretary (CIS) Sheikh Waqas Akram strongly criticised the regime for making what he termed false and misleading claims that the party leadership had been informed and invited to be present during the examination, calling the assertion a clumsy attempt to deflect public attention from the core issue concerning Imran Khan’s deteriorating eyesight.
Refuting the government’s version, Waqas said the authorities had repeatedly denied permission for Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, to meet him, citing the claim that sisters were not allowed to see their brother. He added that when the family subsequently nominated their cousin, Dr Nausherwan Burki, to represent them, he too was barred from meeting Imran Khan and prevented from participating in the medical examination.
He maintained that the issue has never been about the presence or absence of party leadership, stressing that it is the constitutional, moral, and legal right of Imran Khan’s family alone to make decisions in such sensitive and critical medical matters.
The PTI CIS reiterated that the family cannot be expected to make any responsible or informed decision unless Imran Khan’s personal physicians are allowed to be present during the examination, adding that inviting party representatives in a merely symbolic role carries neither moral justification nor legal standing.
Sheikh Waqas said that from day one, PTI and Imran Khan’s family have maintained a clear, consistent, and unequivocal demand: immediate access to his personal doctors and the right of his family to meet him without delay. He emphasised that this demand is not a favour but Imran Khan’s constitutional, legal, and fundamental right.
“Despite this,” he said, “the government and jail authorities went ahead with a medical examination in the absence of both his family and his trusted physicians. Such an action is not only non-transparent but also raises serious questions about the government’s intentions.” He added that PTI categorically refuses to recognise any such examination or accept any report produced under these circumstances.
Highlighting the gravity of the matter, Sheikh Waqas stressed that the complexity and seriousness of Imran Khan’s eye condition make it medically implausible to conduct a comprehensive and credible examination within the confines of a prison, noting that any attempt to do so undermines medical ethics and professional standards.
The PTI CIS further stated that the health of a former prime minister — particularly one facing serious risks to his eyesight — cannot be brushed aside through political manoeuvring, press statements, or cosmetic measures. He added that any delay, ambiguity, or imposed decision in such a critical medical matter is wholly unacceptable.
Reiterating the party’s stance, Sheikh Waqas demanded that Imran Khan be immediately provided proper medical treatment in the presence of his family and personal physicians, warning that any process conducted otherwise will be deemed neither transparent, credible, nor acceptable.
