BEIJING: China will implement zero-tariff treatment for 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations starting May 1, 2026, according to an official statement, in a move aimed at deepening trade ties and expanding market access for African exports.
The tariff exemption will cover a broad range of goods exported to China, further opening the Chinese market to African products and strengthening economic cooperation under South-South partnership frameworks.
Chinese authorities said the initiative reflects Beijing’s commitment to supporting Africa’s industrialisation and export diversification, particularly for agricultural products, manufactured goods and value-added commodities.
In addition to tariff elimination, China will continue negotiating and signing joint economic partnership agreements with African countries.
The statement noted that market access will be further expanded through upgraded trade facilitation mechanisms, including improvements to the “green channel” system designed to fast-track customs clearance for African exports.
The enhanced “green channel” is expected to simplify inspection and quarantine procedures, reduce clearance times and lower transaction costs, making it easier for African producers to enter the Chinese market.
The zero-tariff policy builds on China’s broader engagement with the continent, where it has become Africa’s largest trading partner for over a decade. Analysts say the move could boost bilateral trade volumes, encourage investment in export-oriented industries across Africa and support economic recovery efforts in developing economies.
More details regarding product coverage and implementation guidelines are expected to be released ahead of the May 2026 rollout.
