Three-day Basant festival announced on 13th February in this city

QUETTA: The provincial capital is set to celebrate Basant from February 13 to 15, becoming the second major city after Lahore to revive the traditional spring festival in recent years.

The three-day event is expected to bring vibrant scenes to the city as residents prepare to fill the skies with colorful kites. Markets across Quetta are witnessing increased activity, with shoppers purchasing kites, string, yellow attire and other festival items ahead of the celebrations.

Commercial hubs including Gardesingh Road, Prince Road, Alamdar Road, Kasi Road, Sirki Road, Jan Muhammad Road, Sabzal Road, Nawa Kali, Brohi Road, Jail Road and Liaquat Bazaar are bustling with customers. Vendors say new kite designs and improved materials have drawn strong interest, particularly among young people eager to take part in the festivities.

Despite the visible preparations, authorities have yet to issue a formal statement clarifying whether the festival has official approval or if any regulatory measures will be imposed. In the absence of clear guidance, organisers and traders continue preparations while awaiting direction from the government.

Beyond kite flying, various neighbourhoods are planning cultural programmes, music performances and traditional activities. Organisers say the celebrations will feature local artists, food stalls and family-oriented entertainment aimed at creating a festive and inclusive environment.

Residents say the festival offers a welcome opportunity for recreation in a city often confronted with economic and social challenges. Many believe Basant can help promote community engagement, improve the city’s image and potentially encourage tourism, similar to the revival efforts seen in Lahore.

Organisers describe the upcoming fair as a potential turning point for Quetta’s cultural calendar, expressing hope that the event will provide a sense of joy and unity while marking a renewed chapter in the city’s public celebrations.
