Xi reaffirms priority on China–Vietnam ties, pledges deeper strategic cooperation

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday said China would consistently attach great importance to the development of China–Vietnam relations, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to strengthening ties with its neighbour.

Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting Le Hoai Trung, special envoy of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee To Lam, in Beijing. Trung is a member of the CPV Politburo and Vietnam’s minister of foreign affairs.

During the meeting, Xi noted that the CPC and CPV had long upheld the tradition of reciprocal notification of major political agendas, describing it as a reflection of the unique bond of “comrades and brothers” between the two countries and a sign of strong political mutual trust.

Referring to his recent telephone conversation with CPV General Secretary To Lam, Xi said the two sides had held in-depth discussions on advancing the building of a China–Vietnam community with a shared future of strategic significance and had reached important consensus on the way forward.

Xi expressed confidence that under the strong leadership of the CPV Central Committee headed by Lam, Vietnam’s party, state and people would successfully achieve the goals and tasks set at the 14th National Congress of the CPV.

Highlighting the progress made by both countries, Xi said China and Vietnam had achieved vigorous development in all aspects of socialist construction, demonstrating the vitality and resilience of the socialist system.

China, he said, was ready to work with Vietnam in line with the principles of long-term stability, forward-looking vision, good neighbourliness and comprehensive cooperation, as well as the spirit of being good neighbours, good friends, good comrades and good partners.

Xi further stressed China’s willingness to implement high-level consensus, carry forward traditional friendship, deepen exchanges at all levels, expand cooperation across sectors, properly manage differences and jointly promote the development of a China–Vietnam community with a shared future.

Conveying a reply letter of gratitude and a verbal message from To Lam, Trung said Vietnam consistently viewed consolidating and developing relations with China as the top priority of its foreign policy. He added that Hanoi stood ready to move forward hand in hand with Beijing on a new journey of development.

Guided by the consensus reached by the leaders of the two parties and countries, Trung said both sides should strengthen political trust, material cooperation and public support for bilateral ties, elevate Vietnam–China relations to new heights and deliver greater benefits to the peoples of both nations.
