Bangladesh clears shooters for New Delhi meet despite cricket standoff

Bangladesh has approved its shooting team’s tour to New Delhi for next month’s Asian Shooting Championships, days after the national cricket side declined to play in India over security concerns, a decision that ultimately cost the team its place at the T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the T20 World Cup, scheduled from February 7 to March 8, after officials insisted they would not tour India. The refusal came amid strained political relations between the neighbouring countries and concerns over player safety.

The International Cricket Council rejected Bangladesh’s request to shift their matches to co-host Sri Lanka, citing independent security assessments and stating that a late change to the tournament schedule was not feasible.

In contrast, Bangladeshi media reported that a three-member shooting contingent has received clearance from the country’s sports ministry to compete in India. The group includes shooter Robiul Islam, his coach Sharmin Akhter and jury member Saima Feroze.

The participation was confirmed by Pawan Singh, secretary general of the National Rifle Association of India, who said Bangladesh’s entry had been finalised well in advance.

He said all clearances for participating nations had been under process for nearly three months and stressed that sporting events must adhere to international regulations. Singh added that competitions are conducted under the norms of the International Shooting Sport Federation and in line with the charter of the International Olympic Committee, noting that the association has consistently received government support.

According to Singh, the Bangladesh contingent did not seek any additional security arrangements. He said the team was familiar with India’s tournament protocols, having competed there multiple times in the past, which may explain their confidence.

The Asian Shooting Confederation, which is organising the event, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Asian rifle and pistol shooting championships are scheduled to be held in New Delhi from February 2 to 14.
