MULTAN: Dense fog caused temporary closures of key motorways across Punjab on Sunday, disrupting traffic and prompting urgent safety warnings from the Motorway Police.
Officials said visibility dropped to dangerously low levels on several stretches, including the M3 between Faizpur and Darkhana, the M4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, the M11 from Lahore to Sialkot, and the M5 from Multan to Zahir Pir.
Thick fog was also reported along parts of the National Highway, including Manga Mandi, Phool Nagar, Jambar, Pattoki, Sahiwal, Chichawatni, Iqbal Nagar, and Mian Channu.
The Motorway Police confirmed that the closures were necessary to protect lives and prevent accidents. A spokesperson emphasized that lane violations during low visibility could have fatal consequences. Motorists were urged to strictly follow lane discipline, avoid unnecessary travel, and use fog lights while maintaining safe distances from other vehicles.
Travel during daylight hours, particularly between 10am and 6pm, was recommended as the safest option. Real-time updates and assistance could be obtained via the Motorway Police helpline at 130.
In Bahawalpur, dense smog combined with frigid temperatures created hazardous conditions for residents. Low visibility during early morning and late-night hours caused traffic disruptions on highways and city roads, with some motorways, including the Uch stretch, temporarily closed.
The local Meteorological Office forecast that cold weather and smoggy conditions are likely to persist in the coming weeks, affecting travel and outdoor activities.
