KARACHI: Kainat, a nine-year-old athlete from Sindh, captured national attention on Monday after securing a bronze medal in the women’s 10,000-metre race at the 35th National Games, ongoing across 24 venues until December 13.
She completed the race in 48 minutes and 42.70 seconds, demonstrating impressive determination and control for her age.
Although Kainat finished third, her performance stood out beyond the podium position. Spectators and fellow athletes were in awe of her ability to sustain pace and stamina throughout the challenging long-distance race.
Her coach later revealed that Kainat was initially disqualified from the race due to her young age. National Games officials had removed her from the starting line, stating she was too young for the 10,000-metre event. She was only allowed to participate after her coach submitted a written undertaking, taking full responsibility for her safety and assuring organizers that she was fit for the challenge.
Reflecting on her achievement, Kainat expressed pride in what she had accomplished. “This was not possible, but I made it possible,” she said, remembering the moment she crossed the finish line.
Asked about her thoughts during the race, her response was straightforward: “Just that I need to run. However much there is to run, I will.”
WAPDA’s Maria Bibi won the gold medal with a time of 44 minutes and 21.40 seconds, while Pakistan Navy’s Mumtaz Naimat claimed the silver in 47 minutes and 10.11 seconds.
