Senior PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi undergoes successful gallbladder surgery

ISLAMABAD: Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has successfully undergone a procedure to remove his gallbladder, his lawyer Rana Mudassar Umer confirmed on Tuesday.

Qureshi, who has been imprisoned at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail since 2023, was admitted to the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute on October 31 due to complications from gallbladder stones, his daughter Meher Bano said. She added that his condition had worsened while in custody, making surgery unavoidable.

Speaking to the media, Umer said the procedure was completed successfully. “Shah Mahmood Qureshi will remain under close medical supervision for the next few days,” he added. “He has requested the nation to pray for his speedy recovery.”

Meher Bano also confirmed that the surgery went well and that Qureshi was currently under observation. She noted that the gallstone was particularly large, which made the procedure longer than usual, but added that the doctors performed the surgery successfully. “His recovery will take some time,” she said, expressing gratitude to those who had sent prayers and well wishes.

PTI leader Asad Qaiser, in a post on X, prayed for Qureshi’s swift recovery, highlighting the former minister’s endurance during his imprisonment.

“Shah Mahmood Qureshi sahib has been enduring innocent imprisonment for the past two years due to his loyalty and steadfastness to Imran Khan’s vision,” he wrote. “The courage, patience, and resolve with which he has borne this trial are exemplary. I salute his steadfastness.”

Following Qureshi’s hospitalisation, three former PTI leaders reportedly visited him at the start of November, urging him to join their ‘release Imran Khan campaign’ — a request he declined. According to Umer, Fawad Chaudhry, Imran Ismail, and Maulvi Mahmood were able to access Qureshi while he was alone in his hospital room.

“Shah Mahmood Qureshi was surprised to see them and immediately asked the police on duty to call his lawyer, who had just left, informing him that some ‘guests’ had arrived,” Umer said.
