Lahore’s air quality reaches hazardous levels: AQI hits 221

LAHORE: Lahore’s air quality has deteriorated sharply, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a “very unhealthy” level of 221 on October 23, 2025. The high AQI is attributed to the alarming concentration of PM2.5 particles, which currently stands at 146 µg/m³, a level that is 29.2 times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended annual limit.

The toxic levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are significantly impacting air quality, causing severe health risks for residents. Experts warn that such pollution can lead to respiratory issues, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

The current weather conditions, with calm winds and moderate humidity, are exacerbating the situation by preventing pollutants from dispersing. The air quality forecast for the coming days indicates that pollution levels will remain high, with AQI values expected to hover between 160 and 170 in the next few days.

Health recommendations for Lahore residents:

  • Avoid outdoor exercise to minimize exposure to harmful air pollutants.
  • Close windows to prevent dirty air from entering homes and offices.
  • Wear a mask when going outdoors, especially if you have respiratory conditions.
  • Use air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.

Local authorities have issued health advisories urging citizens to take necessary precautions. The severe pollution in Lahore highlights the growing need for stricter air quality regulations and measures to tackle the city’s chronic air pollution problem.
