The Punjab government is taking significant steps toward bringing back Basant celebrations, making important amendments to the Punjab Prohibition of Kite Flying Ordinance, 2001. The updated regulations now require all manufacturers, sellers, and kite-flying associations to register ahead of the festivities.
The registration process includes fees of Rs. 25,000 for manufacturers, Rs. 15,000 for sellers, and Rs. 50,000 for kite-flying associations, with renewal charges set at Rs. 2,500, Rs. 1,500, and Rs. 5,000, respectively.
Officials have emphasized that strict safety regulations will be in place. The use of metallic or glass-coated strings and oversized kites will remain banned, with severe consequences, including imprisonment, for violators.
This year, Basant celebrations will expand beyond the Walled City to new designated areas, such as Race Course, Model Town, and Jallo Park. In addition, the rooftops of well-known hotels like Pearl Continental, Avari, and Faletti’s Hotel have been cleared for kite flying, offering more space for the public to participate in the festivities.
