PCB clarifies ODI captaincy change rumors

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday clarified that no final decision has been taken regarding a change in the national ODI captaincy, amid speculation that pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi could replace Mohammad Rizwan ahead of the home series against South Africa.

In an official statement, the PCB confirmed that head coach Mike Hesson has formally recommended a joint meeting of the Selection Committee and the Advisory Committee to settle the captaincy matter. Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has approved the proposal, and both committees are set to convene on October 20 to finalise Pakistan’s ODI leadership.

The clarification comes amid intense speculation following Pakistan’s disappointing run in the 50-over format, which included a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand, a 2-1 series defeat to the West Indies, and the team’s failure to advance beyond the first round of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The PCB emphasised that discussions are ongoing and no names have been finalised yet. The upcoming meeting is expected to decide whether the team will continue under Rizwan’s leadership or see a new captain at the helm as Pakistan prepares for its crucial home fixtures against South Africa.
