Holding India accountable a question mark on UN’s credibility: Pakistan’s envoy

NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Caretaker Permanent Representative to the United Nations Usman Javed has said that India is involved in serious human rights violations in occupied Kashmir, of which there is clear evidence.

Usman Javed, addressing the UN General Assembly session, said not holding India accountable is a question mark on the credibility of the United Nations. He said India has deprived the Kashmiri people of the right to self-determination for seven decades, which is a clear violation of several Security Council resolutions.

He said India has started a campaign of serious and systematic human rights violations and crimes based on atrocities to maintain its illegal occupation.

Usman Javed said after August 5, 2019, India’s atrocities in occupied Kashmir have intensified as Kashmiri leadership is being imprisoned, people are being tortured, women being disrespected, and children are targeted.

Indian atrocities have been intensified in occupied Kashmir after August 5, 2019 when the special status of the territory was repealed and it was bifurcated in two union territories.

Usman Javed said the BJP government has imposed collective punishment on the Kashmiri people, and all this is clearly documented in the reports of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2018 and 2019, joint communications of the Human Rights Council, reports of special representatives and joint declarations and resolutions of the OIC.

Despite this, the UN’s failure to hold India accountable is raising questions. He said that Pakistan is waiting for the third report of the Human Rights Office on Jammu and Kashmir.
