ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the establishment of a strong and viable Palestinian state with pre-1967 borders and Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital, calling it the cornerstone of Pakistan’s Middle East policy. He also strongly condemned a terrorist attack on a polio vaccination team in Swat’s Matta area, in which a security official was martyred, vowing that the government’s resolve to eradicate polio would remain unshaken.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) while returning from Egypt after attending the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm el Sheikh, the prime minister said that the freedom, dignity, and prosperity of the Palestinian people remained a primary concern for Pakistan.
“The establishment of a strong and viable Palestinian state with pre-1967 borders and Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital remains the bedrock of Pakistan’s Middle East policy and will remain so,” the prime minister wrote.
Reflecting on what he described as the “potentially transformational nature” of the summit, Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s foremost priority was the immediate cessation of the genocidal campaign in Gaza.
He added that Pakistan was deeply engaged in the diplomatic process and, alongside other brotherly nations, continued to advocate for a durable ceasefire and humanitarian relief for the people of Gaza.
The prime minister also said Pakistan’s position had been consistently reinforced during all interactions and forums, reiterating Islamabad’s commitment to a peaceful, just, and lasting solution to the Palestinian question.
He further stated that Pakistan acknowledged and appreciated international efforts to halt violence and restore peace, saying that any initiative leading to the cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians deserved global support.
Separately, the prime minister condemned the terrorist attack on a polio vaccination team in Swat’s Matta area, where Levies personnel Abdul Kabeer embraced martyrdom while performing security duty.
In a statement, the prime minister expressed deep grief over the loss of life and offered prayers for the martyred soul and patience for the bereaved family.
Calling the attack on public health workers “intolerable and inhumane,” he said those serving the national cause of polio eradication were risking their lives to protect future generations from disease.
“The government is committed to the complete eradication of polio from the country. Despite such resistance from terrorists, the anti-polio campaign continues with full momentum and will go on until the disease is completely eradicated,” he reaffirmed.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that such acts of violence would not deter the national resolve to make Pakistan a polio-free country, ensuring every child’s right to health and a safe future.
