Pakistan agrees to temporary ceasefire following Afghan Taliban’s request

ISLAMABAD: On October 15, 2025, Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban reached a temporary ceasefire agreement, following a request from the Afghan Taliban regime. The ceasefire will last for 48 hours, starting from 6 pm that evening. Both parties have agreed to use this time for constructive discussions, aiming for a positive and sustainable resolution to ongoing tensions.

This agreement comes after the Pakistan Army conducted targeted strikes in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province. These operations targeted key Taliban positions, resulting in the destruction of significant strongholds. The strikes targeted Taliban Battalion No 4 and Border Brigade No 6, causing the deaths of several Taliban militants and foreign operatives.

The Pakistan Army’s response was swift and decisive, with security sources emphasizing the military’s readiness to defend national borders. The strikes caused panic among the Taliban forces, with sources reporting that the group resorted to spreading misinformation in an attempt to cover up their losses.

Simultaneously, militants attempted to infiltrate Pakistan through the Turkmenzai border area in Mohmand district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, Pakistani forces successfully thwarted this infiltration, killing at least 30 militants in the process. The operation is still ongoing, with more casualties expected.

In addition to these developments, Pakistani forces repelled an unprovoked attack by the Afghan Taliban in Spin Boldak, Balochistan, on the morning of October 15. During this confrontation, between 15 and 20 Taliban fighters were killed, and many more were injured. Pakistani forces also destroyed Afghan Taliban posts along the border, effectively repelling further attacks.

Heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been growing, especially since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Cross-border terrorism remains a major concern for Pakistan, with several militant groups operating from Afghan soil. Pakistan has urged Afghanistan to prevent these groups, such as the TTP, from launching attacks into its territory.

In response to these concerns, a recent report from the United Nations Security Council revealed a concerning connection between the Afghan Taliban and the TTP, further exacerbating the situation. As Pakistan continues to deal with these security challenges, it remains committed to safeguarding its borders and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
