NEW YORK: Pakistan has once again demanded an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, urging the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take decisive action to end Israel’s ongoing military campaign.
Speaking at a UNSC meeting, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, condemned Israeli aggression and highlighted the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. He said dozens of civilians were being martyred daily, while children were dying of hunger due to the lack of food. He also pointed out that Israel had not spared hospitals in its strikes.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s consistent support for the Palestinian cause, Iftikhar stressed that Islamabad would continue to push for the establishment of a free and independent Palestinian state. “The Security Council must enforce an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza,” he urged.
The Pakistani envoy also reminded members that Pakistan, along with the other nine non-permanent members of the UNSC, had tabled a resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire. The resolution also sought the removal of Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid delivery to Palestinian territories.
However, the resolution was vetoed by the United States, drawing criticism from several member states and further delaying efforts to halt the bloodshed.
Meanwhile, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza continues, with dozens of Palestinians — including women and children — reported killed each day.
