Iraq updates visa policy for pilgrims with new age restrictions

ISLAMABAD: Iraqi authorities have announced a revision in the visa regulations for pilgrims planning to visit the country’s religious sites, introducing age-based restrictions.

According to Muhammad Umar Butt, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, men under 50 years of age will no longer be eligible for pilgrimage visas if traveling alone. However, exceptions will be made for individuals under 50 who are traveling with their families.

Officials clarified that this policy change aims to improve the management of pilgrims, enhance security, and optimize logistical arrangements at holy sites, especially during peak religious events. They emphasized that the decision is not intended to restrict access to the sacred sites but to ensure a safer and more organized experience for the millions of visitors who travel to Iraq each year.

The updated visa rules will affect all international pilgrims applying for religious visas to Iraq’s holy cities and shrines. Authorities have urged both travelers and travel operators to review the new criteria before submitting visa applications.

This shift marks a significant change in Iraq’s approach to pilgrimage management and is expected to impact a large number of prospective visitors.
