Former Pakistani workers in Korea urged to claim dormant insurance

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan EPS Center, led by Director Kim Ki-wook, is actively guiding former E9 visa workers who returned to Pakistan after working in South Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) to claim their uncollected “dormant insurance” funds.

Under the EPS (E9), foreign workers, including thousands from Pakistan, are allowed to work in Korea for a maximum of 4 years and 10 months.

Upon completion of their employment period, they are entitled to receive departure guarantee insurance and return cost insurance. These funds are meant to support their return and compensate for severance.

However, a significant number of returning workers have not claimed their insurance money, which then becomes categorized as dormant insurance.

Dormant insurance refers to funds that remain unclaimed for over three years from the time of eligibility, even though they have not expired and are still retrievable from the insurance provider.

One of the key challenges in disbursing this money is lack of contact with eligible recipients. Many workers have changed addresses or contact details, making it difficult for the EPS Center to reach them individually.

To address this, the Pakistan EPS Center, in collaboration with the Overseas Employment Corporation (OEC), has published a list of eligible but unclaimed insurance cases on the official OEC website.

Returned workers are encouraged to check their eligibility status on the site. If eligible, they can apply to the Pakistan EPS Center by sending the required documents via registered mail, as outlined on the website.

Moreover, workers who have recently returned and have not yet applied for their departure or return insurance can still do so. Applications can be submitted directly to Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance, the official insurer, or with assistance from the Pakistan EPS Center.

EPS and OEC are now strongly urging eligible individuals to act promptly to retrieve these funds, which are rightfully theirs. For detailed guidance and document requirements, people have been advised to visit the OEC official website or contact the Pakistan EPS Center.
