Sanaullah elected senator from Punjab

LAHORE: PML-N candidate Rana Sanaullah has been elected senator from Punjab in a by-election held on Tuesday, securing 250 out of 251 votes cast.

The official results showed that 251 ballots were retrieved, with 250 valid votes and one rejected. Following his victory, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Sanaullah and expressed confidence in his ability to play an active role in the Senate’s lawmaking process.

“Senators have a crucial role in strengthening the federation and upholding democratic values,” the prime minister said, emphasizing that the Senate elections marked the continuation of the democratic process.

The election was largely uncontested after PTI boycotted the process, stating that any member participating would be defying party policy. Despite this, the opposition fielded Salma Ijaz, wife of PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhry, whose seat became vacant after his disqualification and subsequent conviction in the May 9 riots case.
