KARACHI: Armed robbers made off with over Rs20 million after intercepting a bank’s cash van near Kalima Chowk in Manghopir, police said on Sunday.
The incident occurred two days earlier but came to light after police registered an FIR on the complaint of Security Supervisor Ghazi Khan.
According to the FIR, the supervisor reached New Nazimabad Gate for a routine security check when the cash van passed through. “Two guards were riding a motorbike while the rest sat inside the van. Suddenly, five armed men appeared, stopped the van, and snatched a rifle from one of the guards, Aftab, before looting the cash,” he said, adding that he could identify the culprits if produced before him.
CCTV footage obtained by 24News shows five suspects on two motorcycles surrounding the van before escaping with the money and the guard’s weapon.
Police officials confirmed that efforts are underway to arrest the suspects and recover the stolen amount.
Taking notice of the heist, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar directed the SSP West to submit a report and ordered immediate formation of police teams for the arrest of the culprits. Expressing concern, he remarked that it was “incomprehensible how the police remained unaware of the movement of such a large sum of money.”
