China to work with India to maintain sustained peace, tranquility in border areas

BEIJING: China is ready to continue in-depth communication with India on the boundary questions in a positive and constructive manner, and jointly maintain sustained peace and tranquility in the border areas, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Monday.

Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to a query regarding Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visiting India and holding the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question.

Mao said China is willing to take Wang’s visit as an opportunity to work with India to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, enhance political mutual trust, strengthen practical cooperation, properly handle differences, and promote the continued sound and stable development of China-India relations.

The talks between the special representatives of China and India on the boundary question are a high-level channel for boundary negotiations between the two countries, she said, noting that the two sides held the 23rd meeting in Beijing last December, reaching a number of consensuses on issues including boundary control, mechanism building, and cross-border exchanges and cooperation.

Since the beginning of this year, the two sides have maintained communication through diplomatic channels and actively promoted the implementation of the previously mentioned achievements, Mao said, adding that China is willing to continue in-depth communication with India on the previously mentioned issues based on existing consensus.

During his stay in India, Wang will also have an in-depth exchange of views with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on bilateral ties and issues of common concern.
