Hygiene for hawkers

AS a proud Karachiite, I take immense delight in the vibrant street food culture that defines the city. Whether it is samosa, aaloo chaat, or a plate of paani poori served by a roadside vendor, street food is not just a culinary experience, it is an integral part of what defines us. Like many others, I find it difficult to resist these tantalising flavours. To be honest, Karachi would not be Karachi without its variety of street food.

However, the pleasure associated with street food must not come at the cost of public health. In recent weeks, the city has seen a precipitous and steady rise in cases of gastroenteritis and other stomach-related illnesses, particularly following the onset of the monsoon season.

While several influences, like contaminated water, inadequate sanitation and extreme weather conditions, contribute to the crisis, the role of poor food hygiene practices among street vendors remains a major cause. When food is left exposed, especially in areas with poor waste management, it becomes a magnet for flies that carry disease-causing bacteria.

Street vendors can resolve this problem by adopting simple hygiene measures, such as using mesh food covers, cling wrap and potable water. Responsible vendors do not just serve food; they ensure it is safe to eat.

Public health authorities, the city administration, and community organisations must work together to support vendors with education, basic tools and consistent oversight. The broader goal should not be to discourage street food, but to preserve it.

In a city where street food is celebrated, let it also be safeguarded. Clean food is not a privilege, it should be a matter of routine.
