Sindh seeks suspension of cellular services on 10th Muharram for security

The Sindh government has formally requested the Ministry of Interior to suspend mobile phone services across the province on the 10th of Muharram, or Youm-e-Ashura, to enhance security during the processions. In a letter to the ministry, the Sindh Home Department urged the suspension of mobile internet services along the routes of Ashura processions to prevent any untoward incidents.

The letter also called for the decision to be made in line with existing protocols, with provincial authorities to be informed accordingly. Ashura, which marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his family in the battle of Karbala, falls on July 6 (Sunday) this year.

The government’s request follows heightened security measures for Muharram, with the Ministry of Interior authorizing the deployment of Pakistan Army and civil armed forces to ensure safety during the religious observances. The decision comes after formal requests from provincial administrations and other regions, with troops being deployed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
