LONDON: The UK government is considering restrictions on student visas for countries, including Pakistan, deemed most likely to lead to asylum claims. This move follows political pressures after Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party faced backlash in local elections over immigration issues. The UK Home Office is set to release a white paper next week outlining measures to reduce net migration, which reached 728,000 in the year to June 2024. Data reveals that 16,000 asylum seekers in Britain last year had entered on student visas, with Pakistan, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka identified as high-risk countries for post-arrival asylum claims.
