Trump calls escalation between India and Pakistan ‘a shame’

US President and UN Secretary-General call for de-escalation between India and Pakistan after military strikes and jet downing.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has called the escalation between India and Pakistan a “shame,” marking the first reaction from a world leader after India carried out military strikes inside Pakistan, which resulted in Pakistan reportedly shooting down Indian jets. Speaking at the White House, Trump expressed hope for a swift end to the conflict, noting, “I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past. They’ve been fighting for a long time.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also called for restraint from both nations. In a statement, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric conveyed Guterres’ concerns over the military operations across the Line of Control and international border, urging “maximum military restraint” to prevent a potential military confrontation. Guterres emphasized that the world cannot afford another conflict between India and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the US State Department confirmed it is “closely monitoring developments” but refrained from offering an official assessment, with a spokesperson describing the situation as “evolving.”
