Shahid Khaqan Abbasi calls new NAB ordinance ‘NRO for govt’

ISLAMABAD: Former PM and PML-N senior leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has stated on Thursday that the motive behind the extension of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal’s term was to hide the alleged corruption of the rulers.

Abbasi termed the presidential ordinance “NRO for the government”,

While addressing a presser, Abbasi accused the NAB chairman of serving the PM’s interests.

“No official notification has been issued so far for the ordinance,” he said, adding that he had only seen the president tweet about it.

The PML-N leader criticized the federal government by stating that NAB takes no action against the elements involved in sugar, wheat and medicine scams, adding that it also does not ask probes from tax invaders.

He went on to add that the NAB was unable to ask questions from the Pakistanis named in the Pandora Papers.

“The NAB chairman must pack up and leave if the prime minister does not hold consultations with the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly over the matter,” Abbasi added.

It is pertinent to note that the PML-N has decided to oppose the government by giving them a tough time the new ordinance.

PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah has stated that the party is determined to protest against the NAB ordinance.

It merits mention that President Arif Alvi has promulgated the National Accountability (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021 on Wednesday, under which NAB Chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal will continue to serve the post until a new chairman is appointed.
