KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah has urged the federal government to cease the collection of debt servicing from Sindh government’s resources until the coronavirus pandemic recedes.
In this regard, the finance department on Monday wrote a letter to the federal finance secretary to stop debt service payments in view of shortfalls during the pandemic.
The federal government collects around Rs3 billion as debt service charges from the Sindh government’s resources each month.
According to the Sindh government, there is a serious anticipated shortfall in revenues in view of the pandemic in the near future which is why such collections should be stopped until the situation returns to normal or the danger recedes.
Further, the Sindh finance department, on the directives of CM Murad, has released Rs11.2 million for the Expo Field Hospital.
The amount, which has been handed over to army authorities who would operate the hospital, would be utilised on the establishment of an office, the procurement of necessary equipment and gadgets, proper care of patients and their food.
