SC rejects plea of cop who failed to explain assets detail

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday dismissed a police inspector’s service restoration plea after he failed to disclose the source of his illegal assets that had landed him in jail.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed and comprising Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah heard the case filed by former Station House Officer (SHO) Abdur Rehman who is facing corruption charges.

During the course of proceedings, the chief justice addressing the petitioner’s counsel asked for his money trail.

Justice Shah asked the lawyer how his client had performed hajj costing Rs1.280 million being a grade-16 employee whose salary of Rs30,000 could not explain such a luxury. Additionally, the judge also added that the policeman had purchased a property worth Rs11 million.

On this, Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan added that it was actually two properties, worth Rs30 million, that the accused had bought within two years. He inquired if the policeman had won the lottery or prize bond to support his purchases and ordered the lawyer to inform the court about his client’s sources of property.

The lawyer said that two of his client’s brothers sent him money from abroad while SHO Abdur Rehman himself did real estate work besides law enforcement.

He said his client had declared his property and also paid tax against it. However, the court said that the SHO failed to disclose his assets during the inquiry and rejected his appeal.
