Ex-premier Abbasi, Miftah Ismail’s remand extended

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court on Monday extended the judicial remand of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former finance minister Miftah Ismail till Jan 6 in a case pertaining to their alleged involvement in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) scam.

During the hearing, the court also summoned all the nominees in the reference.

Earlier, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed another reference in the scam after addressing the objections raised by the registrar office of accountability court.

On September 10 last year, the Supreme Court had directed NAB to complete inquiry against Abbasi and others for the alleged corruption in the said contract.

As a former minister for petroleum and natural resources, Abbasi is accused of granting an LNG import contract to Elengy Terminal (Pvt) Ltd. – a subsidiary of Engro Corp – while bypassing the relevant regulations.

In June 2018, the NAB approved inquiry against former premier Nawaz Sharif and Abbasi. The Bureau had said that the contract caused a loss of billions of rupees to the national exchequer.

In January, the NAB interrogated former finance minister Miftah Ismail in the same case.
