Political will can assist in passing legislation which enhances the welfare of people living with disabilities, according to a rights organisation’s brief.
The organisation, the Potohar Mental Health Association (PMHA), held a working group discussion titled ‘Mainstreaming of Disability in the Political, Democratic and Legislative Landscape of Pakistan’.
Group members said that the concept of exclusion for people with disabilities began at home and then is exacerbated in other social settings such as schools.
Another participant called for viewing people living with disabilities as humans and not as mere objects.
Members of the group included Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Council Members Nasreen Azhar and Marvi Sirmed, Psychologist Dr Bashir Hussain Shah and others.
