PML-N to finalise Punjab leadership by May 20: report

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will announce its provincial leadership for Punjab before May 20, reported a local media outlet.

The ruling party will also conclude its first round of short-listing of candidates who will contest the upcoming elections on PML-N’s ticket, according to reports.

Three formulas to determine PML-N presidency for Punjab have been under discussion by the party’s high command. The first is to appoint a single president for Punjab. The second is to stratify Punjab into four zones and appoint four zonal presidents. The third formula under discussion seeks to divide Punjab into two zones, i.e. North and South, and appoint two presidents.

According to reports, the incumbent party leadership favours the third formula and will most likely appoint two presidents.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, Defence Production Minister Rana Tanvir, Punjab Labour and Human resources Minister Raja Ashfaq Sarwar and Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique are being seen as favourites for the posts of provincial party presidents, according to reports.

Meanwhile, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif will be assisted by a six-member committee to award party tickets for Punjab in the upcoming general elections. Manshaullah Butt and Malik Nadeem Kamran are part of the committee. Additionally, PML-N’s president for its Lahore chapter said that the party would most likely conclude these matters by the end of May 2018.
