In order to register Pakistan’s protest against the ongoing violence against Rohingya Muslim community, Foreign Secretary Tahmina Janjua has summoned Myanmar’s ambassador U Win Myint to the Foreign Office on Saturday.
The foreign secretary urged the Myanmar government to take effective measures to prevent such episodes of violence in future and to reach a durable settlement of the issue along with upholding the rights of the Rohingya population.
Janjua demanded that the recommendations of the Kofi Annan Commission be implemented that include urgent and sustained action to prevent violence, maintenance of peace, fostering reconciliation, assuring unhindered humanitarian access and addressing the issue of citizenship from which the Rohingya are deprived.
She also called for a probe into the recent violence and delivery of justice in this regard.
During the visit, the ambassador assured Janjua that he will convey Pakistan’s concerns to the Myanmar government.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said that Rohingya community’s victimization is a challenge to the conscience of the world and Pakistan is committed to providing humanitarian aid to them.
Despite mounting international pressure to curb such episodes of violence, Myanmar’s army allegedly continues to persecute the Muslim minority, which has led to their migration to Bangladesh. The violence has escalated after an alleged Rohingya militant group had carried out attacks on security forces.
Myanmar’s famed Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is under severe criticism from the global community including her fellow Nobel laureate. However, Suu rubbished such criticism, saying that there has been a “huge mountain of misinformation” while paying no heed to the thousands of refugees flocking to Bangladesh.
